Day 8

We started today by completing our maths and English work on eSchools. We worked in our year groups as much as possible.
In the afternoon we did art! We used a wax candle to write words or create patterns. Then we used water colours to create a wash over the top, revealing the secret behind!

Afterwards we spent some time outside playing football, catch and a bit of bowling!

Day 7

Despite the rain outside, we have had a very productive and varied day today at Calton.

We started the day by reading independently, after getting settled with some quiet colouring. We followed this with a Maths lesson, with everyone making a fantastic effort with their lesson. The children listened well, with some wonderful measuring, adding fractions and working with decimals going on around the room.

After maths, we braved the rain outside for break time as well as working out with Joe Wicks. Some children worked so hard they had to have a bit of a lie down!

English came next, with some excellent writing and story maps being created across the hall. There were some excellent discussions and ideas amongst the children during this time.

We watched a film while we ate our lunch before spending some more time on the playground. The children have been playing together as a group and creating their own, socially distanced versions of games.

In the afternoon we all tried a selection of gymnastics techniques. The children were so impressive in the different balances and jumps that they performed!

We spent a bit more time in the playground before coming back inside for some free choice of drawing or reading. The children have shown a lot of different skills today and have had a wonderful time.

Day 6

We started our day with one-to-one reading and some Doodle Maths on the iPads.

We followed this with our Maths learning from eSchools. Most of us were on our White Rose maths for our year groups using the laptops.

We had a break after that with our snack and had some lovely time outside in the sunshine on the playground. After break we completed our English writing or reading comprehension.

Before we knew it, it was lunchtime and we had more play outside after eating together in the hall.

After lunch we had some free play time on the field and then carried out a science experiment creating rocket balloons to fly along a string. We had a competition to see whose balloon could travel the furthest, blowing up the balloons as much as we could without making them burst!

After we returned most children went home and those who stayed had time to watch Hook on the big screen!

Friday 24th April 2020

Day 5

We started the day with some reading, word games and colouring while everyone arrived.

We followed this with Maths for the day. Most of us were working on Doodle Maths but a few of us had some problem solving to do, finding how many different ways we could sort houses using categories that we decided and finding missing numbers.

We had a break after that with our snack. When we came back in we split into two groups to do our English. KS1 listened to a story then completed different activities from our E-schools pages which all fitted with the story ‘Meerkat Mail’ by Emily Gravitt. KS2 looked at different themes from their E-schools pages too: preparing story writing, comprehension on the Stone Age and writing a setting description form the text’ The Lion and the Unicorn’ by Shirley Hughes.

We followed this with a little run outside before eating our lunch outside too.

During the afternoon we completed some of our Quest activities – using a search engine to look at insects, creating an historical timeline, music which we all enjoyed singing along to songs, looking at and discussing some WW1 pictures to see what we could learn from them.

We followed this with some colourful dotty artwork while we sang along to a variety of songs.

We ended our afternoon spending some time outside on the field enjoying the warmth of the sun.

Thursday 23rd April 2020

Day 4

Today, in the morning we went on the iPads and played maths bingo or went on doodle maths. Before snack, we played outside on the bikes and scooters. After our snack, we did the maths lesson that is on E-Schools.

When we finished our maths we played with Lego until it was lunchtime. At lunch we were allowed to eat our lunch outside on the patch.

After lunch we went back outside and did a scavenger hunt. We had a list of things we had to find, when we found them we needed to take a picture and tick it off the list.

When we finished the scavenger hunt we played games with the parachute.

Wednesday 22nd April 2020

Day 3

We started today by completing our maths and English work on Eschools. We worked in our year groups as much as possible.

During our morning break we were so lucky to have a visit from Jackie! She gave us lots of cuddles.

In the afternoon we had work to do in the allotment! Our peas, beans and potatoes needed transplanting into the beds! It was a lovely afternoon for gardening!

Tuesday 21st April 2020

Day 2

Today has been a very exciting day as it has been rather different to the weeks leading up to this. With term officially beginning again, it was lovely to get back into a variety of lessons.

We began the morning with some silent reading and colouring in order to settle ourselves in, before beginning some maths in our year groups. The children worked wonderfully through this lesson and completed a lot of work, as well as showing brilliant understanding.

We had our snacks and played outside using the ride on toys before coming back in to complete our English lesson. It was story maps all round, with each year group having a different text to illustrate. All children again worked diligently through this, creating some fantastic images. This was followed by some guided reading, where the children answered questions based on a text which we read together in our year groups.

We watched The Aristocats while eating our lunch and spent some time playing outside in the glorious weather. We played some different kinds of ball games between the adults and children.

After lunch, we completed various Quest-based tasks within our year group. There were some beautiful French rainbows coloured by Reception and Year 1, with Year 2 creating pictures of, and describing their families to each other. Year 3 Did some fascinating research into significant palaeontologists, and with Year 5 putting similar interest into their research on the changing borders of Europe during World War I.

When we had completed our work, we all spent some time engaging with Opal Play on the field. We played games and built some structures.

We finished the day with some free time where we did some drawing, colouring and finished our film. It has been a very busy day and is sure to be equally as productive tomorrow!

Monday 20th April 2020

Summer Term
Day 1
We started off today with some reading. Everyone was given a book from their reading level and we each read with an adult. Most of us had not bought our WOW books with us so we spent some time designing a front cover for our temporary WOW books.
The teachers thought it would be nice if we wrote letters to people that are living in care homes as they might be lonely because they cannot have visitors at the moment. In the letters we talked about the things we liked to do and also said what we liked to eat. We then asked them some questions about themselves and drew a picture of ourselves. We made sure we did not give our full names as we needed to make sure we stayed safe.
After finishing our letters we had the chance to go on the iPads. We went on a range of different apps including phonics, BeeBot, GarageBand and Maths Bingo but our favourite was SketchNation which allowed us to create games of our own.
We then spent some time doing the Joe Wicks PE session which was really hard, even Joe Wicks found it hard!

We had our snacks whilst watching Deadly 60 on the interactive whiteboard. There were some very big birds on it that could catch seagulls. Before lunch we went outside to play. We played on the bikes and scooters. We also played tennis, catch and other ball games. It was very warm but very windy as well. After lunch we went on DoodleMaths on the iPads and had a short play outside. When we came back in we all chose different Lego challenges to complete. We also watched Shaun the Sheep on the computer.

'Easter Holidays'

Week 2

Although this week should have been part of the Easter holidays, some staff and a few pupils have been in school.

Monday

Today we had loads of fun and spent a lot of time outside in the sunshine. We went outside and were playing on the bikes. We then designed some paper aeroplanes and coloured them in. We used our paper planes to aim for different targets. After that we did an Easter hunt around the forest school and playground areas and solved lots of Easter puzzle clues. At lunchtime, we did some chalk pictures. After then we went down the ramp on the wiggle boards, which was amazing fun. We also played with the frizbees.

Tuesday

Today has been a great day spent much more outdoors than in. We began the day by playing and experimenting with the different kind of bikes and trikes and how we can pedal and steer these. We then spent all morning in the forest area, exploring the different kinds of trees, using the hammock and even digging in the earth to find the different textures. We played on the playground after having our lunch and spent some time on the field, using different items from Opal Play to change and improve our den in the field.

Wednesday

Today we were once again blessed with beautiful weather! We began the morning in the forest school area. We used the clay to create some amazing designs. We will be painting them next week.

As well as this, we also used some paper and wax crayons to do some bark rubbings. They looked amazing!

Later in the morning, we played on the scooters and bikes in the playground and took advantage of all the space. Some of the teachers even wanted to have a go!

After this, we came up with a marvellous idea – to build a den! We used the tyres and wooden pallets and created a castle. Next door to the castle, we created a house and found teddies in the Opal play shed to occupy it. We used our imaginations and placed any teachers who forgot the password in our castle jail!

We ate our lunch outside in our new home (the castle!) We spent some more time in the forest school area. We climbed, built and enjoyed spending time outside. When we got tired of this, we came inside to make use of the shade and the school iPads.

Thursday

Today we started with Doodle Maths on the iPads and a little bit of colouring. Then we started to build a garage with ramps and a pulley – we even made a rope!

After all that hard work we had snack and went outside for a play. We had free play and then started to do vehicle racing on the sloped playground. We raced our bikes and scooters as fast as we could.

Then we found the dressing up box. Soairse was our Queen of the castle (our den we had built) – we also had a special password to get in the castle. We made some food and landscaped the gardens – the Queen didn’t think much of our cooking!

Then we came in for lunch and a rest.

We went to Forest School and made some beautiful ceramic tiles of things that make us happy – we had an ice cream van, a happy smile, a dog, a house and rainbow patterns. We were excited to take them home. They also dug holes for animals to live in, enjoyed climbing trees and chilling in the hammock.

We measured the playground to see how long it was with a trundle wheel – 57m! Mrs White ran the length twice to see how long it took her – 24 seconds – 114m. She’ll have to get quicker to catch Usain Bolt! Saoirse was the winner at 22 seconds.

Friday

Today we started with some reading before riding scooters around the playground. As the sun was out, we then played with the tyres and pallets to build dens.  After eating a quick snack, Mrs Bashford showed us how to make turtles from different circles.

For playtime we went over to the forest area to climb and look at the new trees growing. After this, Mrs Adlam played a game called ‘What goes where?’ We had 6 cards each with a noun on. Mrs Adlam read out a descriptive sentence and we had to work out which noun it was describing. The person who matched 4 descriptions to each of their 6 nouns won.

Next we looked at density. We first looked at syrup and olive oil and decided that syrup would be denser so would sink to the bottom and the oil would rest on top of it. Then we poured in blue water. What we found surprising was that the water went through the oil and rested above the syrup. After that, we tried to find objects that would float in each layer. A lego brick sunk through the oil but floated on the water.

In the afternoon, we played with the Opal equipment, making a den which we guarded with our swords! When it began to rain, we went inside and watched a movie.

We spent some time on the iPads completing DoodleMaths targets before going home.

'Easter Holidays'

Week 1

Although this week should have been part of the Easter holidays, some staff and a few pupils have been in school.

Monday

Today we spent a lot of time making paper aeroplanes. We were trying to make our planes go as far as we could. We also spent some time playing on the wheelie boards.

Tuesday

Today we have had a very exciting day, involving different types of obstacle courses. We have been getting creative with the wobble boards, and started by negotiating an indoor obstacle course on these. This soon moved on to creating our own obstacle courses in the playground, as well as playing some ball games. It has been such wonderful weather that we spent hardly any time indoors, practising our Frisbee skills on the playground. After some time creating different types of paper aeroplane, the children spent time in the field building a fort with Mrs Yeomans, working together to find the most appropriate materials for this.

Wednesday

Today we played on the scooter boards/shuffle boards for a while, and took them outside as well. We did some painting and used some of the how to draw videos on YouTube. Played on the wii for a bit. In the afternoon we played in the allotment, planting sun flowers and water melon!

Thursday

At the start of the day, we made big Easter eggs using balloons and papier mache. Once covered we left them to dry ready to paint! We then played on the scooter boards/shuffle boards outside. We then went on iPads and played maths bingo.

In the afternoon, we made Easter baskets and decorated them. We then went on an Easter egg hunt in the allotment. After, we stayed in the allotment for a while before ending the day by watching a programme about sharks.

Friday

Our morning began with some water fun in the allotment. The staff watered plants, while the children dug holes and filled them with water to make a pond. Sadly, the water drained away so no frogs today! When we returned to the main building, we saw a beautiful peacock butterfly! We watched it for a while, having a drink from water spilled on the ground.

Inside, we built a marble run and had fun seeing how many marbles we could get on at one go. Next, we rode across the playground to the Forest Area. Some tree climbing followed and we found some good resting places.

After lunch outside, our intrepid explorer crossed a deep chasm, balancing with great skill on the narrow log bridge! More time spent playing with marbles kept us out of the sun for a while. A round of tennis finished off the afternoon before going home for tea.

Friday 3rd April 2020

 Day 10

Today started with some reading and Doodle Maths on the iPads. Then it was time to play some badminton and tennis to get our hearts pumping.

We wanted to say a big thank you to all the key workers and to show our appreciation we decorated the letters that spell out “Thank you key workers” and will laminate them ready to display outside school.

We then had a snack whilst watching the live zoo link and learning lots of facts about the animals. After this we went outside, played football and even had some piano lessons from Mrs Bashford.

Then we tended to the allotment: watering the plants, weeding and adding to the den.
Time for some decorating! We had a selection of icing sugar and some biscuits and decorated them to make them wonderful and colourful. We thoroughly enjoyed this activity especially having a little nibble afterwards.

After lunch, we headed to the field to play with the OPAL resources – building the slide, playing in the barrels and creating our own lifeguard tower. We then came inside to finish off the lettering for our Thank you display.

We wonder what adventures next week will bring!

Thursday 2nd April 2020

Day 9

Today started with some Doodle Maths on the ipads. Some of the children then went onto spelling games and became a whizz at spelling some common exception words! After we had all settled in we got our hearts pumping with some go noodle and we thoroughly enjoyed making patterns in Banana, Banana Meatball. Everyone took part, even the adults!

We then sat down and thought about some quotes that we could paint and display in our windows. We came up with:
  • Stay safe
  • Smile J
  • Be happy
  • Be kind
  • Wash your hands
  • Everything will be alright
  • Stay home
  • We’ve got this
  • Be positive.

We then had a snack and relaxed before going outside to play with the footballs and hula hoops. We then went into the allotment and went off to do different things. Some of us continued building the incredible twig den, some of us tidied and some of us went round the plants with a watering can, making sure they had enough water to grow.

After lots of time outside we came back in to eat lunch together and watched the Snail and the Whale and the Gruffalo. Whilst we waited for everyone to finish their lunch, some of us learnt how to make paper aeroplanes and raced against each other. Once we’d eaten our lunches and gained some energy we went back outside to the allotment to create some bug traps. Mrs Preedy told us all about them and helped us to dig out a space in the ground for the trap. When we were digging we came across a millipede! We then filled it with some mulch to attract the bugs and even found the perfect bit of stone to cover the trap to ensure that any bugs or animals have shelter should it rain!

Towards the end of the day we played tennis with each other and made some wonderful art creations with chalk and tape.

We wonder what adventures tomorrow will bring!

Wednesday 1st April 2020

Day 8

We started the morning off with a little bit of colouring while waiting for all our friends to arrive. Then we decided to get active! For a change, we did a cosmic yoga disco. It was definitely different!

We then had a quick snack, and went outside. Mrs Newnham brought some branches so we all helped her unload the car, and then started building our dens! We spent the rest of the morning in the allotment having a wonderful time. We planted carrots and peas, found lots of weeds to pull and tidied up the flower beds.
In the afternoon we spent some time playing on the field. We created some lovely assault courses, which we all had great fun using. The we came back inside to decorate Easter eggs! We used pegs and pom-poms to create splodges and patterns over our eggs.
